My Husband Has, What One Doctor Calls A Hernia, In

My husband has, what one doctor calls a hernia, in his mid section. It starts just below his chest cavity. It seems to have gotten larger over the past few week abd has become tender and painful with minimum pressure. We are having trouble getting in to see a doctor. Is this something that needs immediate attention?
