My Husband Is Having A Severe Pain In The Middle

My husband is having a severe pain in the middle left side of his back. He says it shoots a pain through to the front of his stomach. The pain comes and goes. He went all day yesterday without pain but awoke to severe pain at 1am which lasted til about 3am. It hasn't bothered him all day until now... It's starting to hurt again. What could this be?
