My Husband Will Not Try Scuba Diving Because He Thinks

My husband will not try scuba diving because he thinks he has a hole in his ear drum from about 40 years ago - wouldn't it have healed? He says he can hear air coming out his ear when he holds his nose and blows and that shows the hole is still there. But aren't there eustation (?) tubes between your nose and ear and could it be he is just clearing them or something?
