My Knee Is Really Hurting Behind The Knee. A Few

My knee is really hurting behind the knee. A few weeks ago my rheumatologist said I had fluid behind the knee. What causes that and what can be done to get rid of the pain? She gave me a shot of cortisone but it only stopped the pain for a couple of weeks. It really hurts worse then ever.
