My Left Hip Has Been Hurting On And Off. I

My left hip has been hurting on and off. I am a very active person & I get a sharp pain in my hip when & after I exercise. Sometimes it is almost unbearable, but it usually just hurts to the point where it's painful but not to the point where I can't walk. Why does my hip hurt?
