My Little Toe On My Right Foot Is Red, Swollen,

My little toe on my right foot is red, swollen, warm to the touch and hurts. This is the 3rd time in about 6 months that this has happened. The last 2 times it came on fairly suddenly, but this time it came on gradually. It usually goes away in a day or two, but is very painful while it lasts. No injuries, change in footwear, toenails are good. Any ideas?
