My Mom Is In The Hospital And They Say She

My mom is in the hospital and they say she is going in for surgery in the morning to remove pus from her right lung! Is that the only way to cure it. I am reading about patients having pain from that surgery 3-4 yrs later. Is there an alternative to thoracotomy with decortication for pulmonary empyema?
