My Mom Was Hit Really Hard In The Knee Cap

My mom was hit really hard in the knee cap with a dog leash metal clip. It caused instant pain that shot through her leg. There is already a bump and a bruise and her veins look more puffed up than on the other leg. About 10 minutes have passed and her leg still hurts. What could she have done to it?
