My Mother Has Platelet Count At 40 And There Is

My mother has platelet count at 40 and there is no improvement in sight.
She is 80 years old active and on no regular meds.
She has no bleeding gums or other symptom at this time, but she has been told that if she has a common cold or other infection that she needs to go to the hospital at the hematology department.
This is fine, but I am very worried - does she need to have an emergency to address the issue or should she be treated?
