My Mother Is 71 Years Old And Have Severe Pain

My mother is 71 years old and have severe pain in her upper back and shoulders. Its particularly bad in her sternum. Her sternum is so sensitive that if you touch her on her upper chest in the front on her sternum she recoils in pain. There is also slight swelling in the front on the sternum. Any idea what this is?
