My Mother Stated That She Has Had Puss Like Discharge

My mother stated that she has had puss like discharge oozing from her colon? What does that mean? She has had Diverticulitus surgery more than 5 years ago. Could this be an infection from Diverticulitous or could this also be a sign of cancer? She recently went to the dr and had a x-ray done. She was told that it was an infection and was given a prescription for antibiotics. Now just waiting on results from x-ray.
