My Mother Who Is 87 Years Old, Told Me She

My mother who is 87 years old, told me she had a bulge the size of her palm on the side of her leg below the knee this morning when she got up. It has remained there all day and maybe is slightly smaller this evening. It is hard, but not red or painful. I live an hour away so I have not seen it. Is it something to be concerned about?
