My Mother Who Is In Her Nineties Had An Outbreak

My mother who is in her nineties had an outbreak of facial shingles on her right eyebrow, eyelid. It's been 5 months and though the sores disappeared in a week, she has been in great pain since then. The Gabapentin cream/pills have not helped much. Someone recently mentioned that gentian violet can help pain. Is this true and is it safe?
