My Son Has Had Swollen Pocket Looking Things Near His

My son has had swollen pocket looking things near his tonsils and he thinks ring worm on his scalp. Can one be related to the other? He is in college and is in a dorm but doesn't share his room. He had been to the doctor and they did a throat culture and it came back negative. But they gave him antibiotics due to how swollen his throat was and red, it was sore then. Its been two weeks now and it's no longer sore but still has these odd looking pockets still in his throat.
