My Wife Has Just Had A Swollen Vein Appear In

My wife has just had a swollen vein appear in her wrist. She first noticed this because her wrist was itchy. She went to scratch it and noticed that it hurt, it is swollen, and is hard. There is no apparent injury at the site and my wife has no recollection of any type of injury there. Any insight you could provide on this would be appreciated.
