My Wife Has What Appears To Be Severe Bruising That

My wife has what appears to be severe bruising that started yesterday with itching followed by the discovery and the appearance of clumps of varicose veins on her outer thigh. Today the clumps are completely covered with dark purple round spots. The spots 9"x6" oval and 3"x2" oval are less itchy today but are far more attention grabbing. What could this be?
