My Wife Smashed Her Finger In The Closet Door Yesterday

My wife smashed her finger in the closet door yesterday morning. There is a cut, but because both surfaces are flat I didn't think it was broken. We iced it. 24 hrs later the last digit of the middle finger was pretty bruised but the bruising looked normal. We iced it some more. Right now it looks like the bruising has spread significantly (to the second digit). Is this just normal progression or should we get xrays?
