My Wife's Ring Finger Is Swollen And Red Around One

My wife's ring finger is swollen and red around one side of the nail, the swelling has moved around the back side of the finger now. I thought it was pus building up in there as I have had happened myself but was not able to get anything out after sticking a sharp object down between the nail and cuticle area, I suppose it is. Any idea what it might be?
