Occasionally My Eyes Have A Light Around The Outside Of

Occasionally my eyes have a light around the outside of my vision, it is like a flicker of little stars or dots of light. I can see looking straight but I can also see the lights on the side of my eyes. It doesn't last a long time but I was thinking that it was cause by tired eyes. I would like to know if this is serious. I do have my eyes checked once a year.
