On 08/12/2014 I Had A Pet Scan Which Revealed "asymmetric

On 08/12/2014 I had a pet scan which revealed "asymmetric hypermetabolic activity localizing to the left L 4-5 facet joint correlating with asymmetric arthropathy and degenerative sclerosis". 5 months later the same L 4-5 facet joint completely disentagrated due to osteomyelitis at that joint requiring surgery to remove 4 pieces of bone. My a question is are these related? Should someone have caught and addressed this before surgery was required?
