Over the past seven months I have had a severe chronic cough. Sometimes it is dry and other times there is mucus. My vocal chords have become very strained and my chest constantly hurts from coughing so much. I also have had to start doing online school because my coughing was "disruptive to the learning environment" and coughing up blood is "not appealing to the eye and rather abnormal." I have seen my regular pediatrician as well as an asthma specialist which have all been inconclusive. I am being treated for asthma; however, the medications haven't exactly been working. They also were suspicious about an anxiety induced cough so I am seeing a psychiatrist where I am being prescribed anxiety medications. I have been on five rounds of antibiotics including prednisone, azithromycin, and augmentin. I also take advair and a proair inhaler as well as duonebs, but nothing seems to be working. I also have episodic high blood pressure. The last time I checked my blood pressure it was 176/124 however, on one occasion during the night I had a horrid pain in my left side and was unable to breathe. After checking my blood pressure, it was 81/50 and my o2 sat was 81 (it usually runs from 87-94). My grandmother who was a trauma nurse told me to lay on my left side and although it was excruciating, it helped after about a minute and I was able to breathe again. Do you have any ideas what may be causing this?
