School nurse here. During testing the teachers allowed the students to have gum and mints. I had a 3rd grade boy inhale (by accident) a round peppermint mint. He had just unwrapped it. He came to the health office and went straight to the bathroom. His color was pink. He was breathing with decreased breath sounds on the right side. (Tough to tell, because he wasn't taking deep breaths, because it hurt.) I tried to calm him, he was talking, but kept telling me how much it hurt and how much he wanted it to go away. After assessment I called the parents who were 30 minutes away. By this time he was getting very tired and wanted to lie down, but knew he shouldn't or couldn't. I asked him several questions, and he told me he didn't want to talk anymore. I called 911, I didn't have a pulse ox. I believe that the mint would dissolve, but I didn't want to compromise him, or have him pass out. Did I do the right thing? Is there something else that you would suggest?
