Should Trimethoprim And Sulfamethoxazole Be Discontinued Due To Diarrhea?

I was prescribed sulfamet/trimeth for an ear infection, along with a powdered drink to help with constipation on thursday. I started haven excessive diarrhea by Friday night and stopped taking any of the prescription by Saturday. I've contacted my doctor and he said to continue taken the sulfamet/trimeth because in actually it helps my diarrhea, yet information online states otherwise. What do i do?
