Should The IUD Be Removed During The Menstruation Cycle?

Hi, I was making an appointment to have my IUD removed and was told by the receptionist that it can only be removed during my monthly period. Is this true or should I call back to speak to a nurse? My periods are very heavy and I am uncomfortable having it removed during this time.
