So I Sliced Open The Pad Of My Thumb Last

So I sliced open the pad of my thumb last night while crushing a soup can. I immediately pinched the wound together, washed off the excess blood, and wrapped it with tissue and tape. Knowing I need to change the dressing today and treat with a topical antibiotic, what is the ideal amount of time to wait to do this. Is 24 hours enough, or should I wait longer?
