Something Happened To My Sight That Has Never Happened Before.

Something happened to my sight that has never happened before. I am 74 and do not need to use glasses at all. Suddenly in my left peripheral vision I saw a fluttering translucent area, the rest of my vision was normal ,it lasted for a few minutes, maybe five and when I went outside it subsided. Why?
