Suggest Cure For Severe Pain In The Arm

My boyfriend was lifting weights yesterday and his arms were sore as usual, however today when he woke up he cannot straighten his left arm. He tried himself and I tried to help him, but he has a shooting pain throughout his arm every time he/we tried to move it. Is this a big deal? Should he go to a doctor?
