Suggest Diet Plan To Control Blood Sugar Levels

My dad went through sugar tests and the doctor says that his kidneys are in borderline. The doctor recommended that he should take his diet as normal as to what he normally eats to bring the sugar level down. What diet should he take to bring them back to normal please ? He is 68 years old. Is it something serious. Or should we refer to a kidney specialist.
