Suggest Opinion On Taking Birth Control Pills

I started my birth control on a random day of the month. After one week of taking them will I be protected even though I didn't start on the first day of my period? I only took one, would it be wiser to wait until I get my period before I start taking the rest? Which pills in the pack are the placebos?
