Suggest Remedy For Abnormal Growth In Vocal Cord

my father developed a roughness in voice six months back. CT scan revealed normal vocal chord. But he has been coughing a lot and started having difficulty speaking. Recent CT scan revealed a growth on the vocal cord. What is the solution? Doctors are recommending surgery to get the growth out which will leave him with no voice. They also say they will fix some instrument which will aid in speaking by clicking on a button. We have never heard of this before, so want a second opinion.
