Suggest Remedy For Discomfort And Tightness In Chest

I have been sick with either a cold or the flu since February 19th. It started in my sinuses, dropped to my lungs, went into my throat and caused laryngitis and now is sort of sitting in my upper chest where it is causing some discomfort from tightness but seems to be at least not getting worse. How long should I wait before I go get a prescription cough syrup? Is more than two weeks normal for this? My fever never went above 99.1 or so, so fever has not been an issue nor has dehydration.
