Suggest Remedy For Itchy Red Patches On Torso

i've had these slightly raised, light to dark red, patches appear on my back and torso for almost 2 years and is now getting worse. however my roommate had had the same thing and used althetes foot cream. so i did and it went away but came back. should i be alarmed? what could it be?
