Suggest Remedy For Pain In The Toe Ligament

My husband has a rubber band feeling in the ligament from his big toe when he moves it and it is causing him pain. Had it for about a week. He walks 13 miles a day at work and cannot take off to rest it. He also just bought boots a couple weeks ago. I told him maybe the boots strained it. No other injuries happened. Is this something he can nurse at home that will go away in a few weeks?
