Suggest Remedy For Rheum In The Eye Along With Mucus Discharge

My child is 9 days old. I believe she has rheum in her left eye. It's looks a bit bruised right now and a yellow mucus keeps coming out. This just started this afternoon. I've been cleaning it but it's not enough. What else can I do that's is safe for her.
