Suggest Remedy To Minimise Irritation In A Red And Swollen Suture Area

My husband had suture's several days ago to hold a drain tube in place and the skin around the area is extremely red and swollen (angry) looking it has been this way for two days. Now it is 4:30 on a friday is there anything we can do to relieve the irritation. I wanted to call the Dr the day after the suture's were put in but my husband would not.
