Suggest Treatment For A Corn On The Ball Of The Foot

I have what I think is a corn on the ball of my left foot. It is pretty painful when I walk. I thought it might just go away, but I've had it for a few months now. Once I was pulling at some loose skin on it gently and it immediately began bleeding. What can I do without having to remove it surgically?
