Suggest Treatment For A Growth On Ankle

i am 30 years old in very good health and good shape. i play hockey and i have what i think is a bone spur on the side of my ankle. i have full range of motion with no pain, i can run and exercise without pain. however, when i put the skate on i have constant pressure on the ankle and it is very painful to move around. seems like it is just a growth on the outside of my ankle. it is definitely irritated throughout the workout and has progressively gotten larger and more painful over the last year. should this require surgery and what would my recovery time look like from such a procedure?
