Suggest Treatment For Bad Odor Vaginal Discharge

I noticed at the end of my period last month (12/31), that there was a foul smelling discharge. I chalked it up to being part of my period for a few days. When it didn't go away, I stuck my finger up my vagina to see if I'd left a tampon up there but felt nothing. A few weeks later, I went to the doctor. She said to wait until my next cycle. My next cycle just ended. It was fairly normal, but a little smellier than normal. Today, while taking my shower, I felt something weird down there, so I reached in and pulled out a very disgustung tampon. The discharge has completely stopped and my smell is back to normal. Should I see my doctor to get checked for infection or should I assume I'm ok unless I develop other symptoms?
