Suggest Treatment For Crushed Thumb And Cut Through Nail

30 year old son, just left E.R. ...crushed thumb and sliced thru nail. Stopped bleeding after a few hours. Doc at E.R. said no use in xraying it even though most likely broken because nothing they can do for that anyway, so xray waste of money. Am I right to totally disagree, and urge son to call family doc, tell them no xray was taken and make follow up appointment with them?
