Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Passing Stool In A Child

I have a 3 year old who is having trouble with his bowel movements. He cries when he is having a bowel movement and then it is very thick and sticky. I have tried benefiber daily but it is still not different. Is there a stool softener or laxative that is liquid and flavorless that I could try?
