Suggest Treatment For Hand Pain For Kayaking

While kayaking last week, both my 55 year old friend's hands cramped so badly that he could no longer hold the paddle. The pain was more intense in his left hand and lasted for ten minutes. He advised the pain did not go beyond the hand and that this had never happened before. Could this be a symptom of a heart condition?
