Suggest Treatment For Hyperactive Thyroid

Hi I have been diagnosed with a hyper active thyroid. My mother passed away several years ago from cancer along with other health conditions. The cancer was all in her lymph notes and her thyroid and she basically suffocated. I am now with another doctor and although she is quite willing to do the periodical blood tests, that is the limited of my treatment. I am not on any meds for this condition. Should I be concerned?
