Suggest Treatment For Infected Toenail

i have a toe that was infected at the base of my toenail. the infection seemed to be gone, no more puss. NOW the nail is detached from the base (cuticle area) and is yellow. Should i see a Dr? I saw somewhere that i should file the nail down to allow the new nail to grow.
