Suggest Treatment For Lower Back Pain After An Injury

When my husband fell on the ice-covered concrete steps in front of our house, his lower back hit the edge of the bottom step hard. Now he's experiencing extreme pain in his back, especially when he twists it slightly or coughs. He also hears a "popping" sound when he moves. Should it be heated or iced? Anything else he should do to alleviate the pain? Thank you very much.
