Suggest Treatment For Pain On Side Of Knee

I ve never had knee problems in my life, it started buckling with intense pain on the left side of my left knee shooting down through my shin and foot. Is bed rest and ice enough or do i need a doctor? Walking is intensely painful but it comes and goes throughout the day. Im only 32 and wasnt doing any sports, it just started out of the blue.
