Suggest Treatment For Perforated Bowels

Is it normal to have a perfroated bowel, then the doctor staples the stomach off from the intestines, if the bowel comes splits open. My dads been in the hospital for 3 months with his stomach stapled off., been eating from an iv through his arm, and lost 40 pds, is that normal. Thanks
