Dear Doctor, My mother (82) is a cardiac arrest survivor. Has been on heavy cardiac, BP and diabetic medicines (including oral and injectable insulin) for the past five years. In fact she has been on these medicines since past 10 years (except injectable insulin) that is, five years before the cardiac arrest in 2010. Besides, she has been suffering from nagging UTI since 2006. Having an asymptomatic body she does not show the classic symptoms of UTI. Dr. s say the bacteria are apathogenic. This time (Jan-Feb 2015) however she developed severe UTI with high temperature and breathlessness. She went into cardiac failure and had pulmonary edema. While she has been very stable all this while, it s the UTI that is creating the problem. On most occasions barring one or two, the bacteria detected was E-coli. Her stools too emanate foul smell. I am aware that these bacteria are lodged in the guts and get transferred to the UT. Because of her heart condition she has been advised only 1.5 lts fluid intake (her height is 4.2 ft and weight on most occasions ranges between 38-40 kg). I give her at least 300 ml of barley water every day. Her diet is predominantly vegetarian and high-fibre (including grains, pulses vegetables and fruits). I also give her milk with haldi and ginger powder and a decoction of ginger, lemon grass, black pepper and licorice powder. Please advise treatment for her UTI.
