Suggest Treatment For Severe Callus On Foot Post Injury

HI, After an accident to my right foot (3 tendons, an artery and 2 nerves) I still tend to favour my left foot. I have a callous on the outside pad (just under little toe) that is as tough as a dogs paw and it really hurts to walk on. So far, I have just cut off the excess layers of skin and the pain goes away. Is this acceptable as long as I am not hacking ?
