Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In Foot

My son is eight years old and is complaining that he has a sharp pain in his foot. It is in the arch right above his heel. When I try to touch it he says it is extremely painful. He has been complaining for weeks now and I thought it was growing pains, but I am finding that it is only one of his feet. He is very tall for his age and goes through growth spurts often, could it be growing pains?? or a bone spur?? I am going to take him to the doctor. but would love some advice before going....
