Suggest Treatment For Sore Bumps On Lips

I have many cold sore bumps on my lips and I bough some medication. I applied it to my lips and almost immediatly my lips started to tingle, and burn a bit, and even go a little numb. Is this normal. AND how long until they are gone? Thanks for the help!
